This is one of the most adorable designs you’ll see on a propane tank. If you have an eye-sore like this or just some older propane tanks for a gas grill that are looking unsightly, why not paint them?

Painting a propane tank isn’t any more difficult than painting other metal pieces. Yes, there are some rules you should follow and we’ll cover those as we go along.

The reward is turning what could be an eyesore into a wonderful work of art and a project you’ll be proud to show off.

Let’s take a look at what the original poster ( Kelly Windsor McRae ) wrote about her project and then take a deep dive into how she did it.

“I had such an eyesore next to my vegetable garden, (propane tank) Called my l.p. company and asked if I could paint it. She informed me, if we own the tank we can paint it. Also, if it gets more than 8 hours of sun you can only paint with a light color. Well, lucky for us we live in the woods and my tank only gets 4-5 hours of sun.

I also was told to use metal paint, Rustoleum paint brand, is the popular brand, Ace metal paint is $20 00 less a gallon, and worked great!

****I got permission from my LP company. I live in Wisconsin in the middle of the woods,my tank only gets 4 -5 hours of sun in the summer. In the Winter it gets more sun, however, it’s only 30ﾟand below,

It’s also a 1000 gallon tank and we do not fill it to the brim. They allow expansion. I’ve done all my research. I suggest all of you to do your research, if you want to do the same project.

Let’s see how and how you do try something similar.

Materials Needed

Sanding Block. 60 or 80 Grit

Cleaning Supplies. Detergent, water, metal brush for rust.

Metal Primer.

Paint. The rule of thumb is to paint it a light reflective color. As you can tell, this isn’t the case here. You’ll read in the OP’s description that her home is in a wooded area with only four to five hours of sunlight in the summer. The National Fire Protection Agency in the United States has set guidelines on what colors are generally allowed.

The heat of the sun will cause the tank to expand and contract. This can be a fire hazard if not taken seriously. You can still get creative, but be sure you stay safe.

The only type of paint you should be using are those that are designed for metal surfaces. If you have ever tried to paint a steel framed bicycle or metal patio furniture, you’ll know why. These paints have a rust inhibitor. They keep the metal from rusting and they keep the paint from peeling off.

Check with your local hardware store. They’ll guide you towards paints that have been developed specifically for propane tanks.

Now that you’ve got all of your materials together, let’s get to work.

1. Sand the Tank

Use a wire brush for removing any tough rust spots. Give the entire tank a thorough sanding to remove built up dirt. This is when you want to make sure your tank is in good condition.

2. Thoroughly Clean Your Tank

Once you’ve sanded it smooth, clean the surface of debris. Use what you have. A pressure washer, rags. A natural degreaser and good rinse will work wonders.

Don’t be quick about this. Any remaining dirt can cause your paint to peel. Once it’s clean and rinsed, let it dry completely.

3. Prime the Surface or Don’t

Optional: The dome cover was removed before painting on the primer. Apply the primer using a side-to-side motion. Follow the primer’s instructions on how to apply it to the top and underneath. Be sure and cover rust spots completely.

4. Paint the Tank

This is where you and the original poster will probably part ways. Remember that she had permission to paint her tank a dark color because of where she’s located and how much sun she gets. However, there’s nothing stopping you from painting a brightly colored fun and funky design on your tank. Minions, cows, and yellow submarines are very popular with the “tank” crowd.

5. Paint the Dome Cover

The adorable ladybug gets special attention. It’s a stripe of black with a base coat of red. Black spots are added using a basic circle stencil.

6. Add Stripes

You can see she went over the original dark green with a lighter yellow-green. One of the easiest ways to do this and save on sponges is by painting the stripe and then, using a plastic bag or plastic wrap, remove paint using the same dabbing motion you would if you were applying a marbling effect.

You may or may not have to apply a sealant over your piece. It will depend on the paint’s instructions.

7. Reattach the Dome Cover

It’s time to introduce the ladybug to her new home. The final step in this project was reattaching the dome cover. Note how a couple of eyes were painted on the front of the dome. Someone is always watching the house!

Here’s a closer picture of the ladybug. You can try other types of woodland creatures like a rabbit or duck. The cap is easy to remove so you can easily change the look just by painting this one piece.

DIY Kitchen Island From an Old Dresser

Here’s a project that will upgrade the look of most kitchens in a weekend.

We are in love with this DIY kitchen island from a dresser. It gives you storage without building drawers and more kitchen workspace without building a butcher block board.

The size is more versatile than using a kitchen cabinet. You can find dressers on the side of the road, Goodwill, garage sales, or classified ads like Craigslist.

This is a beautiful way to upcycle an old dresser. This one piece of furniture gives you a seating area, more storage, and a larger workspace at the fraction of the cost of paying the retail price.

The design would work in a cottage style or country farmhouse kitchens. The best thing is that if you know the basics of woodworking, it won’t take much time at all.

You will need space for the island. The recommended space between the island and other countertops or appliances is 36 inches. Truth be told, we don’t think the original poster followed these guidelines, so you have a little room to play if you’re making this for yourself. This project is versatile enough to be a simple workstation if you just want an island without seating.

The trim is MDF, which means you can change up the pattern and paint for a style that suits your kitchen.

Measure out how much room it will take up on the floor. Tape it out and test all the doors to cabinets, appliances, and walking room.

Materials Needed

Old Dresser – Cleaned and hardware removed. A good wipe down with Kilz will clean up any oils. Scuff sand the drawers with 220 grit paper.

Butcher Block – Birch was used here. The thickness was surface planed from 5/4 lumber. Choose a hardwood that will work well in your kitchen.
Plywood – One each: 2 by 4 and 4 by 4 inches
MDF Beadboard
MDF Trim
Food Safe Polyurethane
Screws
Nails
Wood Filler
Sandpaper – 200 to 400 grit
Multi Surface Primer
Paint – Oil based
Drawer Hardware – These should match your kitchen.

The dimensions of all of the following materials will depend on the size of the dresser.

Basic Guidelines:

When it comes to a breakfast bar overhang, the standard size for this should be 18 inches to allow for enough legroom. So, if your dresser and work area are about 24 inches wide, add another 18 to 19 inches for bar stools and legroom.

The total width for two diners will be about 35.5 inches. This will accommodate bar stools. You may land a bargain by doing an online search for butcher block utility boards.

Before securing the MDF to the dresser, you’ll be attaching new legs directly to the base of the dresser. The standard height of a kitchen island breakfast bar is about 42 inches. This means the length of the legs would be 42 inches minus the height of the butcher block and dresser without feet or skirting.

This base is important as it needs to be strong enough to support the heavy countertop.

Jigsaw with a 45 degree chamfer bit

Step by Step Instructions

Remove the drawers from the dresser. Cut off its legs and skirting.

Build new legs from the 4 by 4 plywood. Build the braces by cutting lengths of 2 by 4 plywood to fit in between the legs. Using a Kreg joint jig, screw together these pieces. Screw the assembled base to the bottom of the dresser.

Once the dresser is at the correct height, it’s a simple matter of building out a frame using the MDF trim. You can add skirting using MDF baseboard molding.

Cut the frame to size to fit the back for each opening.

Cut the trim for the sides and nail into place.

Cut the trim for the front and nail into place. Check that there’s enough clearance in the front for the drawers to open. Remove the drawers again before finishing the base.

Attach the beadboard by cutting it to size and nailing it to the dresser. Optionally, you can reinforce the fit by gluing it in place with a strong adhesive.

Here is where you can get creative and attach any decorative molding. The beadboard on the back of this cabinet is actually two pieces with trim attached in the middle. The front mimics that decorative element.

Fill the nail holes and seams with putty.

Once everything has dried, sand the surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper.

Paint the MDF framing and beadboard.

Sand, wipe down and add a second coat of paint.

Paint the drawers. You can paint directly on the finished drawers if you use a multi-surface primer first. If your drawers are damaged, you should fill in any scratches with wood filler, sand with 220 grit sandpaper, and apply the multi-surface primer.

Use a jigsaw with the chamfer bit to cut a live edge on the butcher block.

Sand down the butcher block. Start at 220 grit and work up to 400 grit. Finish it by wiping it down with a tacky cloth.

Apply food-safe polyurethane. Follow the same sanding procedure with 400 grit sandpaper. Clean and repeat as many times as necessary.

Attach the Butcher Block

Working from underneath the top of the dresser, pre-drill holes from the dresser to the butcher block.

With the drawers still removed, pre-drill holes to screw the dresser to the butcher block. Screw-in screw from inside the dresser up into the butcher block.

Attach the new hardware to the drawers and slide them into place.

How To DIY Wooden Sink and Create a Piece of Art For Your Bathroom

A do-it-yourself wooden sink is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you’re planning a bathroom renovation. Can you really create your own wooden sink? With a few simple materials, you really can create a one-of-a-kind piece.

Take a look at the finished sink. The carving style looks like it was chiseled by hand. In fact, you’ll find this style of woodcraft sells for hundreds of dollars in high-end shops. We’re going to show you how to get this look without breaking the bank. When you’re finished, you’ll have a skill that you can apply to other projects. You can make great gifts or sell them as hand-crafted pieces.

We’re going to take you through the steps of how this unusual sink was created. It’s a little large for a home, but by following our simple guidelines, you can create something similar that would look great in a guest bathroom.

Tip: If you don’t have a lot of woodworking experience, a rectangular, shallow basin would be a good starting design. The basics of this project are simple enough, but getting the measurements right for fitting on a vanity can be tricky.

Materials

Wood. Three pieces of reclaimed oak were used for this project. Another good choice is mahogany. Be sure all of the wood has dried properly.
Broken Tiles. The number of tiles will depend on your basin’s design.
Drain Body. This sink is designed for an external faucet and levers. A drain body should be chosen to match the diameter of your drain pipe.
Heavy duty Multi Use Construction Adhesive – like this one
Epoxy Resin – like this one
Car Lacquer. You’ll find a choice between urethane and polyurethane. Polyurethane is more durable.

Tools

Circular Saw
Angle Grinder With Grinding Disc for Wood and a Grinding Disc for Tile.
Belt Sander – this one is perfect
Tile Nippers (optional).
Drill with Forstner Bit.
Aerator mask (used when applying car lacquer).
Caulking Gun.
Clamps.

Plane Your Wood

The amount of wood is determined by the size of your vanity. Keeping it on the shallow side will make it easier to build the tile pattern.

Round bathroom basins have a diameter ranging from 16 to 20 inches.

The size of rectangular sinks runs from 16 to 23 inches front to back and 19 to 24 inches wide.

Since you’ll be gluing all the pieces together, you just need a rough match.

Fill Any Gaps in the Wood with Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin is a strong bonding agent and will seal the imperfections in your wood pieces. The colorful blue river design never gets old. It looks contemporary and is an easier solution than trying to match a wood filler.

Let the resin cure before moving to the next step.

Glue Together Your Wood Pieces

Use the multi-purpose construction adhesive to bond the wood pieces.

Clamp together and let dry.

Saw a Basic Form

Save yourself a lot of time by using your circular saw to cut the basic form down to size. Make sure it will fit on your vanity. This is also a good time to ensure that the basin will fit underneath the faucet when it’s installed. If it’s too high, use a planer or band saw to lower the height.

Start Sanding

Keep sanding until the surface is fairly smooth. You’ll be chiseling off most of the surface area, so it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Sketch Your Design

Sketch an outline of the sink. Don’t forget to mark a drain hole. The measurements need to account for a faucet extending over the basin and the distance from the back wall.

Drill a Hole For the Drain

Using a drill with a Forstner bit, drill a hole for the drain body.

Rout Out the Basin

Use your angle grinder with the wood disc to get the job done. Do a little at a time, working to keep the depth level from side to side.

The depth of the sink shown is 5.9 inches. Most sink basins are 5 to 8 inches deep.

Carve the Outside Design

This high-end look was achieved using a belt sander. You might want to practice on scrap material while waiting for the pieces to dry and the epoxy to cure.

Use 400 grit sandpaper to smooth out the carvings by hand. Optionally, you can use a corner/detail sander.

Draw Your Mosaic Design

This wave design is simple but looks great.

Glue the Tiles in Place

Avoid large gaps by chipping tiles to size using a tile nipper. You can also use the tile nipper to create a rounded edge at the top of the basin.

Optionally, use your angle grinder with a tile saw blade to trim the excess. We recommend using Sika Sikaflex-221 multi-purpose sealant/adhesive. This brand can be sanded.

Caulk the Tiles

After gluing down the tiles, fill in the gaps using more adhesive. Sand over the outer edge.

Set In the Drain Body

Use the adhesive recommended by the manufacturer.

Stain and Finish With Car Lacquer

Cover the drain with painter’s tape. Staining the wood with an oil stain is optional. Spray the entire basin with two to three coats of car lacquer.

The auto shop may try to tell you that you should use furniture lacquer. Car lacquer is weatherproof while furniture lacquer is not. Car lacquer is used as the topcoat on electric guitars to get a high gloss finish.

If car lacquer is unavailable, look for marine-grade polyurethane.

Be sure and let the protective coatings cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before installing the sink.

A fire pit is popular for entertaining or for spending time with family. They’re also a great solution for transforming an otherwise unusable area in your backyard.

You’ll encounter unique challenges if you want to build a fire pit near a hill. We have put together instructions on how to build a fire pit on sloped yard.

We found an experienced do-it-yourselfer who documented his four-year project. He mentions mistakes he made along the way. We’ve included some tips to make this go much faster.

Shovel – It should be a garden spade or transfer shovel. Both have flat blades.

Planning is the most important step for success. Choose an area that’s 10 feet away from structures and has 20 feet of overhead clearance.

Once you’ve determined the placement and size of your fire pit area, check with local authorities for the right permits. You don’t want to put a cement structure over an area where city workers may need to access a gas line or water main.

You also need to consider if you need to build a retaining wall. The wall shown here was built as an afterthought. It works with cinder blocks and poured cement. This is very time-consuming and sometimes unnecessary.

Determine the height and length needed to build your wall. It should come close to level to the top of the hill.

The general rule is if the hill is higher than 29 inches, your retaining wall needs to be reinforced. Under 29 inches and you can build a simple rock wall.

For a wall that measures from 30 to 48 inches, a stepped back wall using blocks will work. If you need a retaining wall taller than 4 feet, consult a professional engineer.

To build a retaining wall as shown, dig a trench, lay down a layer of sand. Tamper it until it’s level. Build out your forms for the cement, add rebar at every level. Leave at least 12 inches in the back to make room for backfill.

Add the drainage pipe behind this row. It should extend past the wall. Fill the front of the trench with soil to prevent the blocks from shifting. Tamper both sides to secure the blocks.

Build out cement sections using wood forms and rebar. After the first level dries, add the drainage pipe behind this row. Add backfill to cover it. If you want to add an electrical conduit pipe, this is the time to do so.

Remove the forms after the cement dries.

You can make a retaining wall faster using retaining wall blocks. These are designed especially for use in retaining walls. They have a lip near the front that locks them between rows so you can use them without cement.

To build it with these blocks, dig the trench with room for the backfill as described.

Continue adding rows of block and backfill.

Secure the last row and top blocks with construction adhesive.

Build out your bench. The bench area is on reinforced concrete. The pavers have been laid into place on the mortar. Build up rows until it’s about 18 inches high.

Build a backrest. Use concrete and mortar and follow the same steps for laying out the backrest as you did for the bench.

As shown in the picture, you can include a channel for electrical conduit. This will make it easier to run lights in the future.

Start gluing up the pavers onto the backrest. Construction adhesive works best.

Fill in-between the pavers with joint compound tinted to suit your style.

Finish off the top of the wall with flat stones. Add an electric power box at one end. Flagstone will keep it hidden.

Clear out the area in front of the bench. Use the tiller for clearing grass and your flat blade shovel to remove dirt.

Using some bricks, map out the area in front of the fireplace. You can also just use spray paint.

Dig out the area in front of the bench to a depth of about 8 inches. Add a layer of sand and tamper it down until the ground is level.

Drop down the weed control barrier over the tampered sand. Smooth out any rough spots or wrinkles. Avoid the area where you’re building the fire pit.

Add gravel. Make sure all the weed control barrier material is covered. It will shift if it isn’t weighed down.

You need to build your fire pit before you finish the patio.

How to Build Your Fire Pit

Your DIY fire pit should be at least 36 inches wide and 12 inches high from the base to the top. It can be built right on top of the tampered sand.

Add your rebar.

Build the inner wall of the pit with fire bricks. Build your concrete form around the bricks.

Check that the form is level before you pour the cement.

Finish the top with a skim coat of mortar. This concrete will take about 30 days to cure completely.

Add a steel ring around the inside of the pit – available on Amazon. This will slow the natural deterioration of the bricks.

Fill the bottom of your pit with a layer of gravel, lava rocks, or fire pit glass. Don’t use pea gravel in your pit. It may be combustible.

Finish building out the patio. Work in smaller sections to place your pavers in the cement.

Here is the final result – your fire pit is built on a sloped yard and looks awesome.
